Hurricane Katrina Perspective

Hurricane Katrina was one of the worse disaster in history, causing over 3,668 deaths in it's wake.  Many people lacked homes and mourning the lost of their love ones. Me and a few of my friends were lucky. My memory of events are blurry at best though. I never experienced a hurricane before and my parents had explained, but it wasn't much to tell how bad it got. All I recalled, was my parents moving my brother and I around. It was raining and thundering when we left. On the first night before the Hurricane worsened, we spent the night with a family friends and others at their house. I didn't get much sleep.

The wind was so strong, it made the front door shake on it's hinges. I had been so terrified before someone managed to coax me to get some rest. In the morning, Dad said they gave the go ahead to bring us to a shelter at his job. I can't remember what the streets looked like as we went, but I remember the first night. We were in a hot room with other families and we were situated on some pallets, Mom and Dad sharing one while Paul and I shared one. We stayed up playing our gameboy before the battery died, forcing us to go to bed.

However, around that time, the power went out. The room and the hallway full of people were plunged into darkness. Again, it took forever to go to bed after that. A few hours later, I guess, my mom woke me up, telling me we were being moved to the lower cells because the hurricane had worsened, spawning tornados. The room was bigger and I felt more at ease since familiar faces were around. It helped people were holding flashlights to light up the room.

I was still groggy so I stayed close to Mom, who was talking with some of her co-workers who had made it to the shelter. When morning came, we took a shower and ate in the cafeteria. Past that is when my memories blur. I wasn't sure how long we stayed at the shelter before the all clear was given. I can't even recall what the streets and buildings looked like after the hurricane.

All I knew is we spent a couple of weeks without power, taking cold baths, and eating rations that were provided. Then a couple of weeks later, there was a call from our pastor and he said he was moving to Texas to start again and asked if anyone wanted to come with. This was a hard time since I was ten when the move happened and I wasn't fond of moving away from my families and friends behind. However, years later, I don't have any regrets. Now...who's wants to tell their part?
